Strength class, decoded

The 45-minute full-body format, the equipment on the mat, and how to choose a weight without guessing.

DOSE Fitness members training with weights in the strength room

Every class is different. The job is always the same.

Strength at DOSE is 45 minutes, full-body, on the mat. It uses dumbbells, bands, pilates balls and your own bodyweight. The lights are low, the music is loud, and every class is different. What does not change is the job: work every muscle group, at your level, with a coach in the room.

It starts before the music

New clients are asked to arrive 20 minutes early. That gives you time to check in, sign the waiver, grab a towel, use the restroom and meet the instructor. At check-in you will find out which weights or props to grab, and you can ask questions before class starts.

If you have an injury, tell the instructor now. Modifications are always available, and they are easier to plan before the room is moving than in the middle of a set.

The room

Strength shares the larger room with yoga. It has a stellar sound system, racks of equipment, huge mirrors, air conditioning and gorgeous lighting. For strength, the lights go down and the music comes up. The mirrors are there if you want feedback, not because anyone is grading you.

The 45 minutes

You spend the class on a mat, barefoot. The instructor leads a full-body sequence using dumbbells, bands, pilates balls and bodyweight. Every class is different, so you will not be repeating the same DVD workout. You will be asked to move in different directions, at different tempos, with different equipment.

Classes are open to all levels. If you are new, start with a lighter weight and focus on control. If you train regularly, the instructor can help you find a version that asks more. The room is built for both.

How to pick a weight

Start lighter than you think. The first set is for learning the movement, not proving a point. Choose a weight you can control for the full set, with the last two repetitions feeling challenging but not sloppy. If your form changes, the weight is too heavy for today.

Ask the instructor if you are between sizes. They will watch the set and tell you whether to go up, stay or drop. That is a normal part of the class, not a beginner tax.

What to bring

  • A mat if you have one; mats are available to borrow.
  • Water. Water is sold in the studio if you forget.
  • Sweat-wicking clothing you can move in. Classes are barefoot.
  • A towel is available at check-in.

The day after

New equipment and new tempos can leave you sore in places you forgot about. That is normal, especially after the first class. Gentle movement, water and sleep do more for recovery than pushing through a second hard session. If pain is sharp, lasts longer than you expect, or changes how you move, check with a professional.

Soreness is not a scorecard. The goal is to come back to the mat with enough energy to move well, not to collect the most difficult week. A ride, a stretch or a rest day can all be the right next dose.

Where it fits in the week

Strength is the anchor. Pair it with spin for cardio and yoga for recovery. The dose changes: a hard strength day may be followed by a ride, a stretch or a rest day. The point is not to max out every session. The point is to keep showing up.

If you are not sure which room you need today, take the Dose Finder. If you already know you want strength, book the class and arrive 20 minutes early. The rest is coached.

Winners compare. Champions show up every day to get better.
